Many people out there ask what does a life coach do as there is much confusion in this industry. I will explain in very simple terms what I do as a life coach so there is a better understanding of this sometimes controversial topic.
First of all there is wide range of life coaches in the life coaching Industry and it depends on what types of life coach you need. Each one can have their own unique coaching sessions & coaching styles depending on what personal goals or action plan you may have.
You have Career coaching, business Coaching, executive coaching, wellness coaches, online life coach and every conceivable expert coach you can think of. Be sure you choose the right one for your own specific actionable goals. A good way to determine this is to read their blogs and see if the material resonates with you or not or is in line with the way you would like to be coaching program to be.
For me a life coach is active listening to the concerns of a client and then identify areas where life can improve through small incremental changes in thought patterns and daily habits to form an actionable plan towards a desired goal.. For me it is important when a connection on a psychological & spiritual level occurs before any coaching is considered.
It is just as important for the coach to have the right client to work as the he or she needs to be in a place where they are determined and willing to follow a custom plan with actionable goals that will include holding the clients accountable for tasks suggested and agreed to from week to week. Both should be committed to one another and any lacking from either side could result in delayed results and must time wasting.
Life coaching is not a quick fix but a lengthy process that takes time as many of the changes takes practice and constant weekly / monthly monitoring to gauge any successes / failures to assess, alter or make further plans for the following week.
There is a common misconception that a life coach as some sort of Psychologist or want to be Psychologist but a life coach does play an active role in the changing of behaviour without the need to go into the deep issues that may be responsibility for a client's current lifestyle. If any mental health conditions come up during the coaching session then that can be discussed if the client wishes but nothing is ever pushed. The sole purpose of the coach is to keep moving ahead regardless so the client stays motivated and eventually any deep issue subsides with time and discussion if the client decides to.
Coaches can be used for almost anything a client wishes to accomplish. Everyone needs a hand, an ear, a shoulder to cry on. a motivator, a guide as they attempt to change some things in their lives. It is not easy doing it alone so many people seek the help of a good life coach to guide them and keep them driven till they reach their goals.
Quite a number of coaches are successful as entrepreneurs in their own professional lives and are aware of the pitfalls in both personal life and business life that can affect good results. As a coach myself, I have run and operated many different businesses and continue to so to this day.
The lesson I found was finding that Work-life balance within my own life as I realised we are all very much unique and have a different set of circumstances that needs . Once that can be identified, a coaching program with key benefits can be created so certain steps are taken in small increments to slowly move forward towards any desired goal in all aspects of life.
This is not an easy process as we are coming from our own comfort zone that dosnt like too much change. Like a child's sweets being taken away and replaced by fruit for example, He or She is not going to like it at first and will rebel. Over time it does get better but not without a few bumps on the road. If a client is ready, determined and willing to expect that then the coaching Journey can be a very enjoyable experience for both the client and the coach involved.
Expect life coaching sessions to be at least 3 months and anything up to 2 to 3 years, depending on what future Goals you would like to achieve. It takes time to alter those bad habits and introduce new ones in your everyday life.
Some coaches like to meet the client in person but that is not really necessary as a zoom call or google meets are just as effective. There are coaching services for whatever needs you have whether they're professional goals or some personal aspirations you may have.
A coach is not there to tell you what to do or how to live your life but to guide you along with your very own journey. Don't be afraid to reach out as you may be pleasently surprised at how enjoyable it is knowing that someone has your back each week and can listen and guide you out of any difficulties you might have along the way.
